Reading
At Meadow Park, we believe that the ability to read is fundamental to pupils’ development as independent learners. In order to read across the curriculum with fluency, accuracy, understanding and enjoyment, pupils need to develop a range of strategies to enable this.
Implementation:
- Every pupil has a timetable with sufficient time to improve their reading ability
- We offer a fully inclusive curriculum that provides relevant and challenging reading opportunities for all pupils
- Salford Sentence Reading and Comprehension Test (SSRCT) on entry to Meadow Park School to baseline reading ages
- Reading targets reviewed half-termly
- Termly reading tests administered
- Test data analysed and used to put targeted interventions in place
- Read Write Inc interventions for lower KS2 with a reading age below their actual age
- Fresh Start interventions for upper KS2 and KS3 readers with a reading age that is significantly lower than their actual age
- Read Write Inc is timetabled daily for KS1
- All primary pupils read daily with a Teacher or TA
- Reading is timetabled during Personal Development sessions
- Reading is mapped out annually for every subject for each year group
- Celebration of reading progress
Phonics:
At Meadow Park School, we follow the Read Write Inc systematic synthetic phonics programme in Key Stage 1. Children are regularly assessed and placed into specifically targeted phonics groups (where appropriate) which cater for their stage not age. We also utilise 1:1 phonics tutoring to ensure each pupil is getting a personalised approach to their phonics development. Read Write Inc is also used as an intervention in Years 3 and 4 for pupils who have been highlighted, through assessment, as below their chronological reading age. Fresh Start phonics programme is used as an intervention in years 5/6 and KS3, for children who still need additional support.
